The League of Ireland Premier Division was created in 1985 and is the top level of men's football in both the League of Ireland and the Republic of Ireland football league. Originally the league season was played from August to May, but in 2003 it announced a 3 year trial as a summer league in order to improve the finances and appeal of the game and to hopefully acheive better results in the Champions League and UEFA Cup. In 2006 it was announced that the change was permanent, and the season now runs from March to November.
SSE Airtricity has sponsored the league since 2010, a partnership that was renewed in 2023.
The League of Ireland Premier Division consists of 10 teams who play each other 4 times each season. 3 points are scored for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 for a loss. Teams are ranked primarily by points scored, then by goal difference and then goals scored.
The top 8 teams each season will stay in the Premier Division. The lowest ranked team of each season is automatically relegated to the First Division and the top ranked team in the First Division is promoted. The team that comes second from bottom will play the second placed team in the First Division for the final Premier Division spot for the following season.
The top team in the Premier Division qualifies for a spot in the UEFA Champions League, while the teams ranked second and third qualify for the UEFA Europa Conference League first qualifying round.
The current league winners are Shamrock Rovers who have held the title since 2020, this is their 21st win. Shamrock Rovers have held the top spot the most times since the league was formed. Dundalk are second with 14 titles.
The only 2 teams that have never been relegated from the Premier Division are St Patricks Athletic and Bohemian.
League of Ireland has it's own streaming platform that means all matches can be watched live on LOITV. You can purchase a season pass, pay for individual games, and selected games are available to watch for free.
In addition to the streaming platform 15 live matches will be broadcast on RTE.
