Gus Poyet: A Tough Season for Spurs and Postecoglou

Tottenham Hotspur's Season: A Campaign of Struggles and Hope

It has been an incredibly challenging season for Tottenham Hotspur and manager Ange Postecoglou. Spurs have struggled to find any semblance of consistency in a campaign marred by a series of injuries to key players. However, with the club still competing for European glory in the Europa League and a number of exciting young talents emerging, all hope is not lost as the season enters its final stages.

We spoke with former Spurs midfielder Gus Poyet to discuss Tottenham’s campaign so far and what the future holds for the North London side.

Djed Spence Has Impressed Me

Djed Spence was one of the young players signed under Antonio Conte, but he quickly found himself surplus to requirements and sent out on loan. Even under Postecoglou, the English full-back initially struggled for opportunities. However, the club’s ongoing injury crisis forced his reintegration into the squad, and since then, he has seized his chance with both hands.

At the very least, Spence has proven himself to be a reliable squad player. At his best, he is now challenging Pedro Porro and Destiny Udogie for a starting place. Some have even called for his inclusion in Thomas Tuchel’s latest England squad. Poyet is particularly encouraged by Spence’s progress and believes he has a bright future:

“I have always been impressed with his stamina—he’s constantly running up and down the pitch. Tottenham loaned him out to gain experience, and I think it has benefitted him a lot.

“In my opinion, he is more of a wing-back than a full-back, but he has plenty of quality. Did he deserve a call-up for England? Maybe, but that right-back position is stacked with talent.

“It all depends on the national team’s system and flexibility. However, in terms of his development as a footballer, he is on the right path. I really like him and have been very impressed with his performances.”

Tottenham’s Young Stars Need Guidance

Tottenham’s transfer approach in recent seasons has been focused on recruiting and developing young players for the future. The club’s summer signings included Lucas Bergvall, Archie Gray, and Wilson Odobert—an exciting trio that Spurs fans welcomed.

However, these acquisitions were not accompanied by the necessary experienced signings to support them. As a result, many of Tottenham’s young players, alongside academy graduate Mikey Moore, have been forced to shoulder significant responsibility this season. While this may prove beneficial in the long run, in the short term, the club has struggled to produce consistent performances.

Poyet remains optimistic about the potential of Bergvall, Gray, and Odobert but is concerned that Spurs lack the experienced leaders needed to nurture these young stars:

“It’s great that Tottenham have such talented young players, but they need strong leadership around them to help them perform at their best. The right leaders can make their development much easier.

“The problem with young players is consistency. They are naturally inconsistent, but at a club like Tottenham, that isn’t acceptable. When you’re 14th in the league, inconsistency becomes a major problem.”

This summer will be crucial for Spurs. Their transfer activity will send a strong signal to both the fans and the players about the club’s long-term vision.

“These young players will feel the pressure, and unfortunately, they are often the easiest for a manager to drop when things aren’t going well. They need to perform at their highest level every week.

“Individually, Tottenham’s young talents have bright futures, but for them to succeed at Spurs, the club must find the right balance by bringing in more experienced players to support them.”

To Get the Best from Gray and Bergvall, Spurs Need Stability

Poyet highlights how young players often see their stock rise after a short period of strong performances, only to be quickly reminded of how unforgiving football can be.

“The issue at Tottenham is that we don’t know what’s going to happen next. Every week, we’re waiting to see if they can find consistency. The team needs to deliver regularly.

“I’m trying to think of Premier League players who have played well individually while being in a team that’s struggling—it’s rare.

“Spurs’ young players, like Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall, need the team to be more stable for us to truly evaluate their long-term potential. Sometimes we get excited about young players too quickly, but in football, consistency is the most important thing.”

Poyet is also mindful of the intense pressure modern young players face, with mainstream media and social media amplifying every success and failure.

“Getting to this level is the easy part. Staying there and maintaining that level is the real challenge. Take Kalvin Phillips, for example. He was fantastic at Leeds, but after moving to Manchester City, he struggled for game time. Now, after a loan move, it feels like the transfer came too soon for him.

“We need to be careful with young players. We can’t elevate them to superstar status overnight, only to forget about them the next day. Patience is key.”

“Society is incredibly negative. We build people up only to tear them down again.

“Young players see everything on social media. One bad comment can impact them more than three positive ones. They need to be mentally strong because the psychological demands of football today are greater than ever.”

The Road Ahead for Tottenham

As Tottenham approach a pivotal summer, the club’s leadership faces a defining moment. The balance between youth development and immediate success remains a challenge. Poyet’s words serve as a reminder that, while Spurs’ young stars have immense potential, they need the right environment to thrive.

For Postecoglou and his team, the next transfer window could determine whether Tottenham can build a squad capable of competing at the highest level—or if they risk another season of frustration and inconsistency.
