The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Football dominates college football in the United States. Originally a part of the Intercollegiate Football Association, the IAAUS emerged as a distinct entity in 1906 and later changed its name to the NCAA. The formation of the NCAA was in response to a request by President Theodore Roosevelt to make the game safer after several deaths occurred during football games.
The NCAA works with AT&T, Capital One and Coca-Cola as its Corporate Champions.
The NCAAF is divided into divisions, with Division I being the highest level of college football. Unusually, Division I is then further divided into the FBS and FCS. The FBS is the highest level in the Division and is divided into 10 conferences. The regular season takes place over 12 weeks for most teams, with 12 games. 8 or 9 of those games against teams in their Conference.
The FBS season runs from late August or early September to January, culminating in a conference championship game. There is no NCAA game to establish the overall division champion. Since 2014, the top 4 teams, decided by a committee, participate in the College Football Playoffs, culminating in the College Football Playoff National Championship bowl game. From 2024 the CFP will consist of 12 teams.
Numerous other post-season bowl games are also held, making determining an NCAAF winner difficult.
Alabama has won the most Championships, with 6 title game appearances and 3 wins. The current reigning champion, as of 2023, is Michigan, with their first Championship appearance and first win, they defeated Washington, also making their first Championship game appearance.
Alabama also leads in overall bowl game wins, having won 45 bowl games, with Georgia second with 38 wins. 3 teams in the FBS have never qualified for a bowl game: James Madison, UMass and Sam Houston State. Charlotte and Louisiana–Monroe are the only teams to have played at least 1 bowl game without ever winning.
Popular bets include point spreads, money lines, and totals. The College Football Playoff introduces high-stakes futures betting, enabling fans to predict the eventual national champion; bets can also be placed on the Heisman trophy winner, awarded to the best player each season.
Gambling rules vary from state to state, and some states do not allow gambling on College Football, while others restrict the type of bets that can be placed.
Various networks and streaming services offer extensive coverage. ESPN, ABC, CBS, and Fox are key broadcasters, showcasing many games throughout the season. Each Conference negotiates its own broadcast deals and is affiliated with a network that airs its games. Conference-specific networks, like the SEC Network and Big Ten Network, provide in-depth coverage for dedicated fans.
